Challengers Tennis Club

Master planned as part of a full block to be occupied by Challengers Boys and Girls Club, Challengers Tennis Club is the first tennis center to be built in South Los Angeles. Four tennis courts, a clubhouse with viewing stands, a snack bar and eating area are included in the facility.

Reducing energy use and solar generation were requirements of a major donor to the project. The clubhouse, without air conditioning, has large opposing windows for cross ventilation. The second floor viewing deck is shaded by a roof structure covered with 2000 SF of photovoltaic panels. The panels generate 100% of the electrical needs of the building and court lighting. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is estimated at about 40 tons per year.
