Located on the campus of Santa Monica College, the Santa Monica Swim Center is a popular civic destination. Siting, access and environmental impacts of the Center were sensitive community issues, and workshops were held at the beginning of the design process to reach a solution that would satisfy the College, the City and concerned neighbors.
The public facility includes a competition pool and a recreational pool. A two-story support building features locker rooms, office space, and a meeting/instructional room. Coaches offices and a viewing deck are located on the second floor. The design features an innovative clear polycarbonate block wall at the 16th Street edge of the site which buffers pool noise from the neighborhood while allowing light to pass through.
