The Children's Library addition to the 1982 Thousand Oaks Main Library respects the distinctive sawtooth massing of the existing building. High sloping ceilings and north facing clerestory windows flood the library with natural light, and a wood and glass paneled wall outlining the southern California coastline defines the spacious collection area. A saltwater aquarium nestled in a cozy space with multi-colored porthole lights and sea blue walls provides a dramatic link between the existing and new wings. Adjacent to the triangular shaped story telling room is an intimate children's garden, and an informal courtyard invites library patrons to enjoy coffee and reading in a shaded outdoor setting.
