Villas at Gower
Villas at Gower is permanent supportive housing serving transitional age youth, adults and families who are homeless and have special needs. The building provides a protective environment for tenants to live and learn new skills before reengaging society The four story building comprises 12 studios, 34 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom apartments over subterranean parking. On the ground floor, two large flexible community rooms serve as meeting and gallery spaces for the display of tenant work.

The apartments form a zinc-clad ribbon that winds through the site, enveloping three wood-clad volumes to create a protective enclave. The wood volumes define the gardens and provide a varied landscape of elevated terraces with views of the city and Hollywood hills. A large courtyard creates a community gathering space adjacent to the gallery and meeting rooms with views through to the street beyond. Circulation is located adjacent to the gardens to animate the building and reinforce a sense of community.

Exterior circulation and large operable windows provide two-sided natural day-lighting and ventilation. Sun-shutters respond to facade orientations to protect the windows. Roof mounted solar hot water heating panels accommodate the entire hot water requirement for the apartment building. The project is designed to meet a LEED Silver certification.
