Located on a small lot in downtown Santa Monica, Step Up on Colorado will provide permanant supportive housing for homeless individuals with mental illness. The facility is over 24,000 SF, with 34 studio units, two community rooms with kitchens, a resident’s computer lounge and library, and support offices.

Inspired by a beautiful site tree, the project was designed around the concept of a Healing Tree. A semi-circle of organically curving balconies was carved out of the front of the building embracing the canopy of the tree, and providing evocative filtered light. The balconies are tied to the common spaces and provide highly social gathering areas for the residents. The Community room at the second floor also spills out into the more protected and private central courtyard. The residents of the facility have varied and changing social needs, and by providing these communal social spaces in addition to the private rooms creates a balance.
